The Rolling Stones - Philadelphia Special ( 2 cd set)

Hey there, Philadelphia, are you ready for the Rolling Stones? Hungry to steal away your children, rot their minds and bodies with a stage presence that one N.Y. Times critic overstated as "straight out of the Nazi youth bund era," the Satanic Majesties of rock will occupy our Spectrum for two shows-July 20 and 21, both at 8 P.M. Tickets for these escapades, limited to four a customer, go on sale June 19 at 10 A.M. at the Spectrum box office. It's been almost two years since the Rolling Stones last American tour, the 30-day debacle which ended with a violence-plagued Altamont freebie immortalized in "Gimme Shelter". Significantly, although the Stones quickly sold out the Philadelphia appearence on that journey, local promoters did back away from an optional second show. Perhaps exorbinant ticket prices ($10 top) had something to do with their caution, or was it a fear that Mick Jagger and the boys just weren't that hot anymore?

In the interm since then, the public split of the Beatles and a general void in new generation-gapping "Superstar" groups have left the Stones to carry the mantle as the World's pre-eminent rock ensemble. All that jive press about the group as an au courant, uni-sexual, sado-masochistic cultural phenomenon hasen't hurt them either. But most importantly in this era of "youthful complacency", the familiarity of the Stones head-slamming, visceral, vibrating musical contortions can still break through our collective psychic barriers. That's power.

This time out, the Rolling Stones are milking the wagon but good in a 2-month, 30-city tour. Originally, their plans called for a more sedate schedule, with several towns receiving the Stones show via closed circut television. But Sly and the Family's recent dismal showing with the "Big Screen" concert concept proved that the pulic hungers for flesh and sweat as much as music. In good faith, it should be said that the Stones do seem sincere in their stated goal of "reaching as many people as possible". Several towns with small auditoriums seating only 3,000-5,000 will house the group. Ticket prices everywhere are $6.50. And the Stones have again engaged Chip Monck (of Woodstock fame) to stage the performances, which guarantees extravagant lighting and tower-mounted speakers.
