Welcome to the Magical Mystery Mixes! The first song on the first CD in this set is also the song that kickstarts the first LP of the Beatles.
While there are many alternate takes of I Saw Her Standing available, it is, like many early Beatles songs, one of the underrepresented songs in the Beatles canon, when it comes to alternate mixes, be it official ones or otherwise.
It did not even get a treatment in the famous „Oopsology“-series, as it`s hard to get something out of a song that is recorded on two-track and mixed in the famous twin-track-stereo by simple oopsing.
(A experimental oopsing did near to nothing, except that John`s rythm guitar gets lost, but that`s due to it`s low level in the mix, not because it`s panned center. The only thing actually on both channels, are the drums and they don`t cancel each other out. While they sure were not recorded in stereo, they do sound different on each channel, so the reason for this could be due to different EQ’ing).
What you get with this mix is basically the left channel of the regular stereo mix, but a bit differently balanced in level and
differently sounding.
It leaves out the lead vocals (as well as the count-in), of which a „echo“ is still audible, either due to room reverb picked up by the microphones of other instruments or put there on purpose to make the vocal track appear a bit more „wet“. Another (unlikely) possibility would be a track-bleed-over, but then it shouldn`t sound so reverbed. Also the main signal of the chorus vocals (John, maybe also George) go missing but it`s hard to tell, if they leave a similar trace as the lead vocal. Also gone is John`s rythm guitar from the right channel.
Featured here are following elements: Paul`s bass, the hand-claps (John + Paul) and (to a lesser extent) George`s lead guitar (which is also audible less loud on the eliminated channel) and the higher frequencies of Ringo`s drums. Paul plays his bass-line throughout the song and is the driving force (together with John`s matching rythm guitar), The nice and quite precise handclaps were the only element not done live but a overdub to take 1, called take 12. George plays his classic mixture of pickings, riffy chord inserts and solo pieces.
Although the only edit Lewisohn mentions is the one of the count in (from take 9) in front of the actual song body (take 12), there are some indications that more edits took place before the mixing:
What has been reported as a bad edit at 1:23, could be a drum insert (1:22 to 1:23), making this actually two edit-points. Close listening to the Magic Myster Mix proves this unlikely: maybe it was just a short rise in volume / pan to the middle to showcase the drum-roll or even simpler a bit of static on the tape.
There were also reports of edits at 1:32 and 2:26 and indeed George`s solo guitar sounds different from 1:32 to 1:56 (the solo), especially when coming out of this section. But again this can be because of pushing the level of the guitar / panning it a bit more to the center for the solo, besides he plays the upper strings slightly muted after the solo, which can make a very different sound. The reported edit at 2:26, where a fill by Ringo is said to have the sustain of the crash chopped off can not be confirmed at all.
Note: This version of the song is slightly faster than other versions. It has not been speeded up during the magical treatment, but appears like this on it`s source.
